Our story
Incorporated in 1929, the Winnipeg Winter Club has been at the heart of the city for nearly a century. Its roots in ice sports and formed from the Winnipeg Skating Club, a driving force behind its development was Donald Henderson Bains; captain of the Winnipeg Victorias when they captured hockey’s Stanley Cup in 1896 and 1901. Donald was also a national champion in figure skating and an active lacrosse player. Recognizing the opportunity to bring communities together through sport and recreation, the Winnipeg Winter Club grew to offer racquet sports, swimming and bowling.
During the Second World War, the original facility at 51 Smith Street was requisitioned by the Department of National Defence and the members used the funds to purchase the current facility at 200 River Avenue, to which figure skating legend Barbara Ann Scott laid the building cornerstone in 1949.
The Club has continually evolved to meet the needs of its members—transitioning from bowling lanes, curling sheets and a bubble dome tennis area, to expanded arena with full-sized hockey rink, and introducing a modern fitness centre and dedicated child-minding space.
